Où : CARR BOYD RANGE - KIMBERLEY - WESTERN AUSTRALIA - South & North
Durée : 14 days
Points forts : Waterfalls, swimming, gorges and rivers, Campsites, Aboriginal Art sites.
Langue : Anglais et Français
We will explore the two distinct areas of the Carr Boyd Range, North and South.
The highlights in the North Carr Boyd are the campsites located on the waterfalls or in boab country, the swims in turquoise natural pools or in the deep blue rivers, the escarpment offering vast views across the range or the plains and hidden rock art sites.
At the end of the wet season, waterfalls and swimming holes follow one another along the languid rivers of the South CarrBoyd. We will explore spectacular gorges, some up to 200 metres deep, by foot and by swimming. We will provide you with the right equipment to keep your pack dry.
Start Kununurra.
Fin: Kununurra
The expedition starts at 7:00 am on the nominated date. We will travel by bus to Lake Argyle, where we will catch the boat to Revolver Creek to commence our exploration of the Carr Boyd Range.
We will explore the Carr Boyd South range for seven days, walking approximately 6-12km daily. Our day will start early to avoid walking in the heat. We will set camp around 3 pm. There will be many opportunities to cool off in the many pools we pass by.
On day 7, we get a food drop in the Carr Boyd North Range.
One of the highlights of this second week is the diverse campsites, where we will have plenty of time to relax. The varied locations include waterfalls, savanna forests, niche rainforests, and Boab country (Baobabs).
The weather in the area can vary greatly. Daytime temperatures can climb beyond 30° C, whereas evening temperatures can be cold.

During our adventure, I will endeavour to keep us in the present by ensuring that tomorrow only exists in our imagination. I would like you to disconnect from everyday life by surrendering to the present, focusing on our walks and discoveries of these beautiful ranges. Let yourself be guided for a few days without worrying about what tomorrow will be. Staying in the present is a very simple and pleasant life experience, invigorating for the mind and the body.
This adventure is for people who can walk ten kilometres, which is within the reach of most of us. The most important thing is being consistent walkers able to walk for one hour without stopping. The difficulties we encounter are steep climbs, off-track walking, and the heat. However, everything is manageable.
We recognise and acknowledge the Miriwoong Gajerrong people as the Traditional custodians of the Kununurra area of the East Kimberley and their continuing connection to land, water, and community. We pay respect to Elders past, present, and emerging.

The little-known Carr Boyd Ranges lie west of the huge and impressive Lake Argyle, source of the Old River irrigation scheme. This is rugged and breathtakingly beautiful, ancient sandstone country punctuated by deep gorges and seemingly endless, beautiful fresh water swimming holes, making the hot, dry walking climate easy going. The vegetation and rock formations form a beautiful palette of greens and reds against the brilliant blue, cloudless skies. The nights were cool (no tent fly was needed however) and the night sky brilliant with stars. The ‘dark emu’ was clearly visible on nights with less moonlight. We moved from beautiful campsite to another beautiful campsite, every day ending with a cooling swim, relaxing in the shade and dinner before an early bedtime for the star show. A helicopter transported us from South to North Carr Boyd Ranges, allowing a different perspective of the amazing country through which we were walking. The beautiful campsites, gorges and views from the North Carr Boyd escarpment are too numerous to mention.
Walking the South and North Carr Boyd Range in the heat of April was going to be a challenge. With intimate knowledge of the area, a well structured schedule and attention to everyone’s needs, our leader, Sebastian, made it a pleasure. Walking across rugged ranges, exploring unexpected side gorges and swimming in pristine waterfall-fed pools will long be remembered. So too will be visits to lesser known features of the area that only an experienced and knowledgeable guide can provide. A great experience that I would commend to anyone with a spirit of adventure.
